It’s time to pack up the tailgating supplies and put another season in the history books. Millions tuned in to watch the Super Bowl last night and even those who don’t like the sport tuned in to watch the commercials, and that’s impressive in the DVR era. But for some organizations it’s more than a game. It’s an opportunity to raise funds for their nonprofit organization. Here are a few events organized by some North Texas nonprofits capitalized on the Super Bowl.
Habitat for Humanity
Super Bowl XLV was a success and so was Super Build 45. Habitat for Humanity set out to build 45 new homes. They succeeded and broke the previous record of 38 set in Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston. Super Build 45 offered a number of volunteer opportunities and gave 45 families a new home.
North Texas Food Bank
Taste of the NFL celebrated its 20th anniversary with this Super Bowl. The event featured over 32 restaurants that represent one restaurant from each NFL city. These restaurants provided food and wine pairings for participants to sample. A current or former NFL player served food at each of the booths. Talk about a photo opportunity and a fun way to raise money.
Youth Education Town
NFL Youth Education Towns were started in 1992. The NFL decided to finance and construct an after school program in Compton, California to coincide with Super Bowl XXVII played in Los Angeles to correct social inequalities. This year, the NFL teamed with the Salvation Army to set up the Youth Education Town. Among the features of the facilities are libraries, technology labs, classrooms, fitness centers and recreation fields. The Youth Education Town in Arlington is slated to open in 2012.
